During the activity, students will be assigned different roles based on real patients from rural Appalachia. The students will navigate poverty, low health literacy, difficulties accessing healthy food options, and many more barriers that their future patients may experience. Faculty, staff, and second year students will be volunteering as bankers, employers, police officers, grocers, social workers, childcare providers, etc. RHI and CRCH are heavily involved in coordinating and funding the event. We are hoping that by bringing employees and students together at the beginning of the year, we can foster long-lasting relationships and continued dedication to rural health and communities. This activity was designed by one of our own students, Maddie Robinson, and was implemented into the curriculum last year! Prior to this, it was part of the co-curriculum for two years in a row.
